Teen "Nailed It!" Contest: All Entries Revealed - WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Welcome to our first-ever Teen "Nailed It!" contest! 🎂

 

Teens attended an online Watch Party on July 8 to see what the baking competition is all about--then dived straight into our virtual library version!  


Contestants had a little over four weeks to recreate the official recipe at home, fitting in with the Summer Library Program's fantasy theme: a dragon cake!  This summer the "taste" category is off the table (😭), so this year's judges--the entire Bellevue Public Library staff--will be evaluating all entries for:

  • creativity
  • presentation
  • and who "nailed it" the most!

(Please note: contestants were not asked to include the mossy cobblestone platform in their creations.)


One winner will be announced and awarded the week of August 17-21--so be sure to check back here to see which entry gets the glorious and honorable contest crown stamp! 

 

 👑 Contest Grand Prize: $50 gift card and a bag of SLP swag!

Fluffy Stellar Slime

Squishy, stress-relief, star-filled slime! And so fluffy--like a soft, soft cloud. ⛅










Supplies

  • bowls
  • wooden stir sticks/spoons
  • PVA glue (Used: Elmer's white glue.)
  • measuring tools: 1 cup, 1 teaspoon,½ cup, ¼ teaspoon
  • acrylic paint (Used: Sargent Art Liquid Metals acrylics.)
  • baking soda
  • shaving cream (Used: Barbasol, but any brand should be fine. Highly recommend using unscented or lightly scented--like aloe.) 
  • star confetti
  • contact lens solution (Used: Walmart generic brand, Equate. You can try other brands, but it must contain sodium borate, or another boric acid derivative)
  • optional: baby oil (To eliminate residual stickiness.)

1. Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

2017 Bellya Summer In Review: Craftzilla - DIY Floam Slime!

Earlier this July, teens took to our large event room to science up some floam slime! It can be a tricky process: too much or too little of an element can result in a tough dough or a sticky mess.

But with careful instructions--and perhaps a little intuitive sense (*gasp* Is that...unscientific?)  (No. 😉)--you can repeat the perils and pleasures of slimemaking.

2017 Bellya Summer In Review: Teen Iron Chef!









Our 10th annual Teen Iron Chef commenced last Wednesday, with 8 two-person teams poised to take the 2017 champion title by combining wits, dexterity, and a swift mastery of the secret ingredient!

All the teams overcame time and utensil limitations, but in the end, one duo's savory and sweet concoction persuaded the judging panel to award them the win! The Bellevue Public Library is pleased to announce this year's culinary conquerors as:

Team: The IncrEDIBLES (Lilly and Gabby), featuring a 
picante veggie salad, with a chocolate and strawberry creature pudding!

Celebrate April as National Poetry Month with the Blackout Poetry Challenge!


What's the Blackout Poetry Challenge?

Choose a page from the Bellya window basket and use a sharpie/dark marker to black out everything BUT the words you want to create a poem.

It can be silly or serious, and you can make as many as you like! Pin yours to the board and read what others have created!

You may also share poems that you have already written. Just stick'em on the board!

Teen Tech Week: Epic Gamefest!


Saturday, March 15th turned out as a pleasantly breezy day, perfect for gaming both inside and out!

The Bellya was proud and excited to present a mobile gaming theater from Gamez Gone Wild. Very much a luxury limo-style trailer, with seven high-definition TVs, LED lighting, and climate control, players could battle for supremacy or conquer quest after quest on 16 indoor and eight outdoor stations.

There were over 80 games to choose from, on five different consoles--Xbox One and 360, Wii U, Playstation 3 and 4.

Thumping, blood-pumping beats played in the background, meshing well with a symphony of sound effects--the consummate gaming music. It was definitely a highly stimulating experience.

Many an attendee dubbed the experience "awesome" and asked if we might one day have another EPIC GAMEFEST.  *strokes chin* Perhaps...perhaps...｡◕‿◕｡

Book Review: "Quicksand House" by Carlton Mellick III

I am extremely excited for this review!  Why, do you ask?  Well, I LOVE the Bizarro fiction movement and this is the first bizarro book I feel will sit comfortably in a Young Adult area.  About now, some of you may be wondering what is Bizarro fiction.  The best way I can think of to describe Bizarro fiction is to ask you to imagine Adventure Time with a decidedly mature bent.

The hallmarks of Bizarro fiction include decidedly absurd plot elements and characters, a gore factor that is right out of low budget B horror films, and a sexuality that pushes boundaries far beyond what most would consider normal.  It is crazy stuff and I LOVE it!  Frankly, I can't get enough of the stuff.  The fact is, our culture is rife with more and more of the same old same old.  Be it artistically, fashion, the things we eat, the things we watch, and what we're advertised to enjoy in our free time, there just aren't many people pushing the boundaries in this culture.

Book Review: "Super Graphic" by Tim Leong

In the past few years displaying information in a visually appealing manner has become an art form.  Every internet denizen or news network viewer is familiar with the term infographic and I'm positive the majority of us have some of our favorites bookmarked or sitting in boards on Pinterest.  Whether the information is about important or topical subjects, scary and downright saddening, just plain off the wall, or simply fun infographics have become and integral part of our visual lives.  "Super Graphic: a visual guide to the comic book universe" seeks to apply this new infovisual art form to the world of comics and does so with great aplomb!  "Holy introduction, Batman!  Let's get to the review!"

Book Review: "Last Stand of Dead Men" by Derek Landy

Things have been busy, which means I find precious little time to sit down and type blog entries.  So, I fail pretty hard at blogging, but I struggle gamely onward!  The nice thing about running all over the place for workshops, conferences, classes, and the like is that I have ample time to read between appointments and commitments.  That means that, while I haven't been posting, I have been reading.  That last bit means I have a few reviews to post.  As I have a few moments while I work at the circulation desk tonight, I'm going to try to hammer those posts out!

Book Review: "The Maleficent Seven" by Derek Landy

There are few book series that I have patience for if they go beyond 3 books and that patience is further diminished for series that result in various spin-offs.  This is not so for the Skulduggery Pleasant series.  The series is now up to 8 books with various novellas and the new spin-off novel featuring Tanith Low.  Even given this legion of books, I am continually in awe of how the story and its characters grow.  So much so that even though only the first three books have been released in the US (one of the biggest oversights among a pile of oversights and mistakes made by the American Publishing Industry) I import them from the UK as soon as they are released at great cost and it is totally worth it!  Also, it is kinda cool to get packages from the Royal Mail . . . anyway, time for the review!

Book Review: "Momentum" by Saci Lloyd

Once again, I find myself putting off this whole writing-of-reviews thing.  At least this time I have an excuse . . . getting the event schedule together.  But, now I've done that, so I have no excuse.  I finished "Momentum" about a week ago and now I want more.  Though, I have to say that I certainly didn't think that would be the case when I was at the beginning of the novel.  I'm glad I had faith in Saci's ability to spin a grim and dirty not-so-distant future; it sure paid out in the end.

Here is our schedule for September!  Yay for school year programs!  This September will have the first Gamefest of the school year!  So make sure you come for an amazing (and utterly chaotic) afternoon of fun and games!  We'll also be trying the Book Brunch program again, so don't miss your chance to talk geek and eat donuts!  And the Teen Advisory Board starts again, so get in here and tell me what you want from your library!  This year you will have the opportunity to rack up volunteer hours for helping with planning and executing events as a core TAB member! If you have any questions about the events, just let me know!
