DIY: Make at Home - Rice Krispie Creeper!

  Gordon Wyant

FLOAM!For this week's "Make at Home!" I thought we'd do something sweet.  I have yet to meet the person who dislikes rice krispie treats.  I'm sure they exist, but given their poor taste, I don't imagine I'd spend much time talking with them if I was given the opportunity.  I mean, they are gooey, crispy, sweet, and like edible Floam.  Anyone remember Floam?  For the uninitiated, Floam was this amazing substance that involved a kind of thick slime with tiny Styrofoam balls all mixed up inside.  This made for an amazing moldable and sculptable substance that had a crazy fun texture.  Here, I'll find a pic . . . There you are.

Anyway, it is much like rice krispie treats in its sculptiness.  Which got myself and the La Vista Librarian excited when we were thinking of ideas for her Minecraft event . . . we could make RICE KRISPIE TREAT CREEPERS!  People have done some pretty amazing Minecraft stuff with Rice Krispie Treats, but we didn't find any actually sculpted versions.  So, we did . . . and they turned out crazy fun.  Check this guy out made by a participant!...

Hey, that's a nice everything you have there. Tssssssssssssss....

Pretty ridiculously amazing, right?  Yeah.  Crazy fun to sculpt AND eat.   And what's more?  The Rice Krispie Treat itself is fun to make.  So a good time from start to tasty finish!

Making these things is pretty straight forward.  All you need is some butter (works MUCH better than margarine), a box of Rice Kripsies (the knock off brands work just as well), a bag of marshmallows, some green food coloring, and some small candies or chocolate for the face (square things work best . . . like the little tiny chocolate bars that make up the bigger chocolate bar in Hershey Chocolate Bars).

You start by making the rice krispie treats.  There are TONS of variations of the Rice Krispie Treat Recipe, so search about and find the one you like most.  There are even vegan versions, though I can't speak to their suitability as a sculpting material.  Once you have settled on your preferred recipe, start making the treats.  The only difference here is just before you would add the Rice Krispies to the melted marshmallows, you will want to add 4 to 5 drops of food coloring and mix well.  Then add the krispies and add a couple more drops of the food coloring, this step will give a variety of green shades like the Creeper texture, and mix it really good.  Just follow the rest of the recipe instructions.

Once you have your rice krispie treats, grab a chunk and start sculpting!  For clean lines and angles, I would suggest a slightly buttered spatula.  If you need some reference images, just log onto your Minecraft account and go Creeper hunting!  You could even join our library's server at: 199.96.85.6:25602!  The only problem is once you have made your Creeper, you may not want to eat him.  When you do, though, I can promise this Creeper won't explode!

Have fun and post your pics!

Also, I don't really hate people who dislike Rice Krispie Treats . . . I just know they are wrong.  Very, very, very wrong.  :)
